Aomori

Hirosaki Castle in Western Aomori prefecture has a snow festival around the same time as the Sapporo one. It's on a much smaller scale, but it's not too bad. The cherry blossoms are also worth a viewing here.

The Shirakami Mountains are really pretty and there are some good campsites in the area (marked on most maps).

Towada-ko - Just outside Aomori City is Sannai Maruyama - the largest Jomon site in Japan. It's free and open till 4. There are English manuals and you can ask for headsets in English at the front desk to listen to the movie.

Yagen in the Shimokita Penninsula - great place to see snow monkeys, maybe even basking in the onsens!

Hakkoda-san really worth a hike then be sure to hit Sukayu Onsen at the bottom, "The 1,000 person onsen."

Osorezan - one of the three major Buddhist pilgrimmage sites. A bit spooky and very sulfurous, it's also beautiful. Basically the meeting place of this world and the afterlife, so if the idea of ghosts freaks you out, don't go there.

Jesus' Grave - did you know He was buried at Herai? It takes about 45 mins from Lake Towada. It's very famous and nice place to visit. This is an URL of the Japanese map. You need a car to visit there. http://www.mapion.co.jp/c/f?uc=1&grp=all&nl=40/26/49.102&el=141/05/27.654&scl=25000&coco=40/26/49.102,141/05/27.654
